Engage a recruiter like you would target a new client to your business.
Do they serve your market, do they ‘talk your language’. How congruent are they with your business. Meet them (online or face to face) as this is an important relationship because they can help you and your company attract talent that can increase the productivity and value of your business. Understand their recruitment process, obtain the detail of what they do and how they do it. Be prepared to commit to them, treat them like a partner not a supplier. People are not commodities in your business so don’t treat your recruiter like one, set expectations of what you want from them but also listen to their advice - this is their profession.
